Welcome to Phillipshaugen Lodge
- three buildings nestled within the picturesque Øksendal mountains:
The Old house built in 1899 is the jewel in the crown,
the modern building was added in 1982 and has a dining hall with panoramic views,
and the little exotically named Madagascar cottage.
Inside the Old House you’ll find a cosy library and a beautiful restaurant with authentic character and soul. We have tried to maintain the original features and lovely atmosphere of Phillipshaugen, and we aim to offer guests a great mix of British class in traditional Norwegian settings and history, in line with Lort Phillips interior and intention.
There are plenty of fire places and deep Chesterfield furniture for guests to sink into and relax with a refreshing drink after a day of skiing or hiking around the area.
The rooms
The Old Lodge of Phillipshaugen offers space for up to 20 people in 10 very inviting rooms
with timber walls and amazing views towards the Øksendal valley.
The newer building houses 15 simple but good quality rooms. There are five double rooms
and 10 rooms for up to four people.
The Madagaskar cottage is our small gem on the property. Fully equipped - with kitchen, bathroom and living area - it is the perfect self contained accommodation for a couple!
Adventures
It does not matter when you decide to visit us at Phillipshaugen Lodge -
it is perfect all year round! If it's summer or winter, nature is always on our side. Our beautiful surroundings makes every day a new adventure. When the winter is upon us you can ski down the mountain. But during spring and summer when our mountains are filled with sunshine, it is perfect for a bike ride or a walk through our stunning valley.

Our history
Phillipshaugen Lodge is named after the wealthy Englishman Ethelbert Lort Phillips,
whose signature is still in the lodge logo.
Towards the end of the 19th Century Lort Phillips built five “sports villas” in Scottish Highland style around inland Nordmøre. He catered the wealthy British upper class who were interested in salmon fishing in the area. The five lodges were Hvilestedet at Leikvin, Vangshaugen, Todalshytta, Tredalsbakken
and Phillipshaugen.
Lort Phillips used Phillipshaugen as a starting point for hunting and fishing,
as well as for recreation and parties with good friends. It was also rented out to tourists and
Lort Phillips’ friends and associates to enjoy.
Today the lodge is almost identical to how it looked when it was built over 120 years ago: One of the buildings has been constructed out of notched timber logs, with natural wood panneling inside.
During the Second World War the cabins were rented out to the British Army who used them as a recreational place for their officers.
Lort Phillips visited Phillipshaugen for the last time in the late 1930s, right before it was sold.
From 1946-1961 the lodge was owned by the Royal Norwegian Automobile association,
and the Norwegian Mission Company took it over from 1961-2014.
At the beginning of the 1980s a new and modern building was erected, containing 15 bedrooms, a large kitchen and a dining hall with panoramic views across the Øksendal mountains.
The lodge has now been bought by local investors, who once more are inviting visitors from all over the world to enjoy the beauty of The Lodge for overnight getaways, weddings, meetings, seminars,
festivals as well as school camps.
